Becontree — built between 1921 and 1934 as one of the largest council housing estates in the world — covers a vast area of Dagenham with its characteristic 1920s and 30s semi-detached and terraced houses. Many Becontree properties have been sold under Right to Buy and are now privately owned. Barking town centre has seen significant regeneration with new apartment developments. Chadwell Heath has inter-war and post-war semi-detached housing. The riverside areas near Dagenham Dock have some modern developments.

The Becontree estate properties — the majority of Dagenham's housing — are built with solid brick or brick-and-block construction, which is excellent for TV mounting. The external and party walls are solid brick. Internal walls in the original Becontree properties tend to be solid brick or older plasterboard. Many properties have been extended or modernised, adding plasterboard internal walls. Newer apartments in Barking town centre are plasterboard throughout.
