TV Mounting Above a Fireplace

Yes — we mount TVs above fireplaces, but we do it properly. Before drilling, we assess the heat output, plan the viewing angle with a tilt bracket, and route cables safely. Part of our full TV wall mounting service across London.

Heat, viewing angle, and cable routing are the three challenges. We solve all three before we pick up a drill — City & Guilds Level 3 qualified and BS 7671:2018 compliant for any cable run near the fire.

What We Check

Four Things We Assess Before We Drill

Above a fireplace, the planning matters as much as the installation. Here is our process.

Heat Assessment

We check the heat output and ventilation direction of your fireplace before committing to any position. A mantelpiece that deflects heat forward protects the TV above it — but not all fireplaces have this.

Tilt Bracket Required

A TV above a fireplace is almost always higher than ideal viewing height. We always recommend a tilt bracket — angling the screen down toward your seating improves viewing comfort significantly.

Cable Routing Plan

Cables cannot drop straight down into a live fireplace. We plan the safest cable route — through the chimney void, along the breast, or through the wall — before we drill anything.

Correct Mounting Height

At least 12 inches above the mantelpiece as a minimum clearance from heat. We also factor in your seated eye level and sofa distance to find the best position within that safe zone.

Common Questions

TV Above Fireplace FAQ

Is it safe to mount a TV above a fireplace?

It depends on the type of fireplace. Above a decorative, electric, or sealed gas fire with a proper mantelpiece that deflects heat, a TV is generally safe when positioned at the correct height. Above an open wood-burning fire or a high-output gas fire, the sustained heat output is a genuine risk to the TV electronics. We assess the heat situation before confirming any position.

How high should a TV be mounted above a fireplace?

A typical starting point is at least 12 inches (30cm) above the top of the fireplace surround or mantelpiece — but the right clearance depends on the fireplace heat output and the TV manufacturer's temperature limits. We measure the heat at the proposed mount height before drilling, and confirm the position against your seating distance and eye level on the day.

Is the viewing angle too steep when a TV is above a fireplace?

For many rooms, yes — this is the most common complaint about TVs above fireplaces. The chimney breast position forces the TV higher than the ideal eye level. We always use a tilt bracket above a fireplace so you can angle the screen downward toward your seating. For very high positions, a full-motion bracket gives the most flexibility.

How do you hide cables from a TV above a fireplace?

Above a fireplace, cable routing is the trickiest part of the job. Options include running cables through the chimney void (where access allows), down inside the chimney breast cavity, or along the side of the chimney breast using slim matching trunking. We assess which route is cleanest and safest for your specific chimney breast on the day.

Can I mount a TV above an electric fireplace?

Yes — electric fireplaces generate far less heat than gas or wood-burning fires. As long as the unit is not a top-venting model pushing hot air directly upward, a TV above an electric fireplace is safe at the correct height. We check the ventilation pattern of your specific unit before confirming the position.

How much does it cost to mount a TV above a fireplace?

Mounting above a fireplace starts from £100. We typically recommend our Premium tier (from £200) which includes a tilt bracket and cable routing behind the breast, plus a heat assessment if you have a working fire. See /pricing.

★★★★★Google Review

I highly recommend, do not hesitate to book. We had a bit of a tricky mounting of a TV onto a fireplace, mainly due to lots of wires and awkward plug socket locations. Our installer was incredible at making this install work for us. His precision and care was incredible. No mess, and he went above and beyond to get everything just perfect. Price was also incredibly good compared to some other companies I recieved quotes from. With the service we recieved the value was second to none. Thank you!
