No Stud? No Problem · Cavity Fixings Rated to Load
Mounting a TV Without Studs
Yes, in many cases — we can safely mount most domestic TVs on plasterboard without hitting a stud. We use specialist cavity fixings — grip-it anchors, toggle bolts, and snap toggles — sized so the combined pull-out rating exceeds the TV’s loaded weight (TV + bracket + arm leverage). Larger TVs (75"+) are confirmed against the wall on the day. Part of our full TV wall mounting service across London.
The stud is not the only option. The right cavity fixing achieves a solid, lasting mount. City & Guilds Level 3 trained — stud-free plasterboard installs are a regular job for us across London.
The Challenge
Why Standard Fixings Fail Without a Stud
Standard screws fail in plasterboard
A wood screw or standard rawl plug in plasterboard has almost zero load-bearing capacity. The soft gypsum core crumbles and the screw pulls straight out — sometimes with the TV still attached to it.
Cavity depth varies between walls
The gap between the plasterboard face and the structure behind it varies. Standard toggle bolts may not work if the cavity is too shallow — we carry fixings sized for the range of cavity depths typically found in UK homes and confirm the right fixing on the day.
Full motion brackets create high lever loads
When an articulating arm is extended outward, the load on the fixing points can be 3–4x the TV's weight due to leverage. Cavity fixings must be specified to account for this — not just the TV weight alone.
The Solutions
The Cavity Fixings We Use
We carry all four types and choose the right one for your wall depth, TV size, and bracket type.
Grip-It Cavity Anchors
Spring-loaded metal anchors that fan out behind the plasterboard when inserted. We check the manufacturer's rating against your TV's loaded weight. Our go-to fixing for most no-stud installations.
Best for: Up to 65" TV, any cavity depth
Toggle Bolts
A folding wing mechanism that opens inside the cavity when the bolt is inserted. When tightened, it creates a very wide bearing surface against the back of the board. Very high shear strength.
Best for: Deeper cavities, heavy brackets
Snap Toggles (SnapSkru)
A reusable metal strut that sits permanently in the cavity — the bolt can be removed and replaced without losing the fixing. Excellent for full motion brackets where occasional repositioning may be needed.
Best for: Full motion brackets, repositionable
Load Spreading Plate
For very large TVs (75"+) without stud access, we can fit a wide steel spreader plate that spans across multiple cavity anchors, distributing the load over a wider wall area.
Best for: 75"+ TV, maximum load

Common Questions
No-Stud TV Mounting FAQ
Is it safe to mount a TV on plasterboard without hitting a stud?
Yes — when the correct cavity fixings are used. Grip-it anchors and toggle bolts are specifically designed to create a strong fixing point in plasterboard without needing a stud behind them. Manufacturer shear ratings vary by product (typically tens of kg per anchor); we use 4–6 per bracket and check the combined rating sits above the TV's loaded weight (TV + bracket + arm leverage).
What size TV can be mounted without studs?
With the correct cavity fixings, we safely mount TVs up to 65" without studs. For 75" and above, we recommend locating the studs for maximum security — but if no studs are in the right position, we can use a wider spreading plate with multiple anchor points that distributes the load safely.
Why can't I just use regular rawl plugs in plasterboard?
Standard rawl plugs are designed for solid walls — brick, concrete, or block. In plasterboard, there is no solid material behind the screw to grip. The plug pulls through the soft gypsum core under load. Cavity-specific fixings expand behind the board and grip the back face — a completely different mechanism.
How do you find the studs if you want to use them?
We carry a professional stud finder that detects both timber and metal C-studs behind plasterboard. However, studs are not always in the right position for your preferred TV placement. In those cases, we use cavity fixings to achieve the same result wherever you want the TV.
Will the TV wobble if it is not attached to a stud?
When the correct fixings are properly installed, the rigidity is comparable to a stud-mounted bracket for most domestic TVs. We check for any movement after installation and correct it on the spot before we leave.
Do you use different fixings for a full motion bracket with no studs?
Yes. A full motion (articulating) bracket creates a much higher lever load when extended outward. For full motion brackets without studs, we use a wider bracket plate to spread load across more fixing points, and we increase the number of anchors to maintain safety margins.
How much does it cost to mount a TV without studs?
Mounting a TV on plasterboard without studs uses specialist cavity anchors and starts from £100. Most no-stud jobs fall in our Standard tier (from £150). The fixings are included in the price. See /pricing.
