TV Mounting on a Brick Wall

Brick is one of the strongest surfaces for a TV bracket — but only when drilled correctly. We use an SDS hammer drill, the right rawl plugs, and always scan for pipes and cables before touching the wall. Part of our full TV wall mounting service across London.

Whether you have solid Victorian brick or modern cavity walls, we identify the substrate on the day and calculate the fixing pull-out rating against the TV’s loaded weight before drilling. City & Guilds Level 3 trained — brick is one of the wall types we work on most regularly across London.

The Challenge

Why Brick Walls Need the Right Approach

Brick is strong — but that strength can work against you if you use the wrong tools or the wrong fixings. Compared to plasterboard, brick is harder to drill but easier to anchor securely.

Wrong drill speed shatters the brick

Drilling too fast into brick generates heat and vibration that can crack the brick face or split the mortar line. You need an SDS hammer drill at the correct RPM with masonry bits — not a standard cordless drill.

Standard rawl plugs are not rated for TV weight

Many DIY fixings are rated for pictures or shelves — not a 20–30kg TV plus the lever effect of an articulating bracket. The wrong plug will slowly pull out of the brick under sustained load.

Pipes and cables run inside brick walls

Power cables, water pipes, and gas pipes are often chased directly into brick walls. Drilling blindly — even into brick — risks hitting a live cable or piercing a water pipe. We scan with a professional multi-detector before every fixing point, BS 7671:2018 compliant.

Our Methods

How We Get Every Brick Wall Install Right

The right tools and fixings make the difference between a solid permanent mount and one that fails.

SDS Hammer Drill

We use a professional SDS hammer drill with tungsten-carbide masonry bits sized precisely for each fixing. This cuts clean holes in brick without the cracking risk of rotary-only drilling.

Heavy-Duty Rawl Plugs

We carry Fischer and Hilti-rated wall plugs in M6 and M8 sizes. We pick the plug whose manufacturer shear rating sits comfortably above the loaded weight of your TV and bracket combination.

Pipe & Cable Scanning

Before any drill touches the wall, we scan the surface with a professional multi-function detector. We map out cable and pipe positions and choose fixing points that are clear of all services.

Wall Assessment First

We check brick type, wall thickness, and surface condition before drilling. Older Victorian or Edwardian brick can be more brittle and requires a different approach to modern engineering brick.

Fixing Guide

Brick Type & Fixing Method Guide

Different brick types require different approaches. Here is what we use for each.

Wall TypeFixing UsedNotes
Solid brick (modern)Fischer M8 rawl plug + M8 boltStandard install
Solid brick (Victorian)Wider rawl plug, slower drill speedSofter brick assessment
Cavity brick wallThrough-brick fixing, avoid cavitySolid leaf only

We assess your specific wall on the day. If we identify unusual construction or damage, we will advise the safest approach before any drilling begins.

Common Questions

Brick Wall TV Mounting FAQ

Can you mount a TV on a solid brick wall?

Yes — solid brick is one of the strongest walls for TV mounting. The key is using the correct heavy-duty rawl plugs and drilling at the right speed. We carry a professional SDS hammer drill and the full range of fixings for brick walls.

What fixings do you use for a brick wall TV mount?

We use heavy-duty wall plugs (Fischer or Hilti rated) with M6 or M8 bolts depending on the bracket specification. For very large TVs, we use sleeve anchors set into the mortar or brick for maximum holding strength.

Is it better to drill into the brick or the mortar?

For TV brackets, we prefer to drill into the brick itself rather than mortar. Mortar is softer and can crumble over time under load. Brick gives a harder, more stable fixing point — especially important for brackets that extend outward.

Will drilling into brick damage the wall?

Done correctly, drilling into brick causes minimal damage — just a clean hole slightly larger than the fixing. We scan the wall first for pipes and cables, and use the correct speed and pressure to reduce the chance of cracking. Once the bracket is installed, the holes sit behind the bracket plate and are not visible from the front.

How do I know if my wall is solid brick or cavity brick?

A solid brick wall is typically 230mm thick. Cavity walls have two layers of brick with a gap between — commonly found in homes built after 1920. We can determine this quickly on the day. Both types are suitable for TV mounting with the right approach and fixings.

Do you check for pipes and cables before drilling into brick?

Yes. We use a professional cable and pipe detector before drilling any fixing point. Brick walls often run power cables and water pipes internally, especially near sockets and radiators — scanning first is part of our standard procedure.

How much does TV mounting on a brick wall cost?

Brick-wall TV mounting starts from £100 (basic) and most jobs sit in our Standard tier from £150. Brick is one of the strongest substrates so the install is straightforward; cable hiding via external trunking is from £25. See /pricing.
