TV Mounting on Plasterboard Walls

Plasterboard mounting is safe for most domestic TVs when the right approach is used. We locate the studs first, then specify cavity fixings whose combined pull-out rating exceeds the TV's loaded weight (TV + bracket + arm leverage) — calculated on the day before the first hole is drilled. Sizes 75" and above use a stud-mounted bracket and a two-person lift. Part of our full TV wall mounting service across London.

Backed by BS 7671:2018 electrical compliance — the bracket, the fixings, and the cable run are calculated together, never assumed. Plasterboard mounting is a regular job for us across every common London plasterboard variation.

The Challenge

Why Plasterboard Needs Specialist Fixings

Most DIY attempts on plasterboard fail — not because the wall is too weak, but because the wrong fixings are used. Compared to solid walls like brick, plasterboard needs a different fixing strategy.

Standard screws pull straight out

A regular wood screw into plasterboard has almost no holding strength. The screw cuts through the soft gypsum core and the fixing fails under load — often with the TV still attached.

You cannot see what is inside

Behind plasterboard there may be timber studs, metal C-studs, noggins, pipes, or electrical cables. We scan with a professional multi-detector before any drill touches the wall — and avoid every cable run identified, BS 7671:2018 compliant.

TV weight is higher than it looks

A 65" TV can weigh 20–25kg. Add the bracket, add the leverage of a swivel arm extended outward, and the actual load on each fixing point can be significantly higher than the TV weight alone — which is why we run the load calculation (bracket arm length × TV centre of gravity × pull-out rating) on the day before the first hole is drilled.

Our Methods

How We Get It Right Every Time

We carry every type of specialist plasterboard fixing and choose the right method for your wall and TV size.

Grip-It Cavity Anchors

Heavy-duty metal anchors that expand behind the plasterboard when tightened. Each one is rated to 50–80kg in shear load — far more than a TV ever needs. We use 4–6 anchors depending on TV weight.

Stud-Mounted Brackets

For larger TVs (75"+) we locate the timber or metal studs behind the plasterboard using a professional stud finder and mount the bracket directly to them. This gives the strongest possible fixing.

Toggle Bolt Fixings

Where cavity depth allows, toggle bolts provide an exceptionally strong fixing with a wider bearing surface. We use these when the plasterboard has limited stud access and the TV is heavier.

Wall Assessment First

Before we drill anything, we check the wall — thickness, stud positions, pipe/cable detection. We never guess. If there is any doubt about a fixing point, we relocate it or use a stronger method.

Common Questions

Plasterboard TV Mounting FAQ

Can you mount a TV on a plasterboard wall without studs?

Yes. We use specialist cavity fixings — grip-it anchors and toggle bolts — whose combined pull-out rating we calculate against the TV's loaded weight (TV + bracket + arm leverage) before drilling. No stud is required when the correct fixings are used at the correct spacing. City & Guilds Level 3 trained.

What is the maximum TV size you can safely mount on plasterboard?

We safely mount TVs up to 65" using cavity anchors specified to the load. For 75" and above, we use a stud-mounted bracket and a two-person lift — the standard safe-handling procedure for large TVs in our team. The wall is assessed on the day and the most secure method for your TV size and wall condition is used every time.

Is it safe to mount a 65-inch TV on a plasterboard wall?

Yes — a 65" TV typically weighs 18–22kg. With 6 properly installed grip-it anchors or a stud-mounted bracket, this weight is handled safely. We have mounted hundreds of 65" TVs on plasterboard without issue.

Can I get a TV mounted on a plasterboard wall in a rented flat?

Yes. We work in rented properties regularly and use the correct fixings so the bracket is solid. If your tenancy requires making good when you move out, we can patch the fixing holes neatly as part of a remount or dismount visit.

Are you insured for TV mounting on plasterboard walls?

Yes. All our work is covered by full public liability insurance. If anything is damaged during installation it is fully covered.

How much does TV mounting on plasterboard cost?

TV mounting on plasterboard starts from £100 for a basic install. Most plasterboard jobs land in our Standard tier (from £150) which includes specialist cavity fixings. Adding cable hiding behind the wall is from £80. See /pricing for full details.

Rayhan at Mount TV installed a TV on my wall perfectly. Measuring the distance from the sofa to the television in order to identify the ideal height for the television. The service did not feel rushed and he also advised that as I have wires behind the wall alongside a plasterboard wall that special screws were required and a particular area to avoid installing the television. Professional service and competitive pricing. Highly recommend.
