Essex housing stock is predominantly suburban — 1930s semi-detached and detached homes, 1960s–80s estates, post-war bungalows, and a growing number of new-build developments particularly around Chelmsford, Brentwood, and along the A12 corridor. Older market towns like Saffron Walden and Braintree feature Victorian and Edwardian terraces and detached properties.

Common Wall Types

Most Essex properties built before 1980 have solid brick external walls and plasterboard internal partition walls. 1930s and 1950s homes often have solid brick throughout including internal walls. Newer builds (post-2000) are almost entirely plasterboard. New developments around Chelmsford are typically timber-frame with plasterboard throughout.
