Yes — a 65-inch or 75-inch TV can be mounted safely on a plasterboard wall. The key condition is using fixings specifically designed for hollow wall or cavity installation. Standard wall plugs intended for solid walls will fail in plasterboard under the weight of a large TV. The right fixings are widely available, load-rated, and form part of our standard kit on plasterboard jobs.
Why plasterboard requires different fixings
Solid walls (brick, block, concrete) grip masonry plugs through compression as the screw expands the plug into the surrounding material. This works because the material itself is dense and strong.
Plasterboard is different. It is typically 12.5mm thick (sometimes 15mm in newer properties), with a hollow cavity behind it. A standard plug placed into plasterboard has nothing to grip against — when loaded, it simply pulls straight through.
Cavity fixings are designed specifically for this situation. They expand behind the plasterboard face as they are tightened, clamping onto the back of the board and distributing the load across a larger area. The result is a very secure fixing that does not rely on the wall cavity behind it.
The fixings that work — and what to avoid
| Fixing type | Load rating (each) | Best for | Use for large TVs? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard wall plug (red/brown) | Rated for solid walls only | Solid brick/block | Never in plasterboard |
| Plastic hollow wall anchor | 5–10kg | Light items only | No — insufficient load |
| Grip-It anchor (nylon) | Up to 25kg each | 12.5–15mm plasterboard | Yes — use 4–6 per bracket |
| Metal cavity anchor (e.g. Fischer) | 40–60kg each | Standard plasterboard | Yes — 4 fixings more than sufficient |
| Snaptoggle bolt (Toggler) | Up to 80kg each | Any plasterboard, metal stud | Yes — strongest cavity option |
| Stud mounting (into timber stud) | Limited only by stud integrity | Where studs align with bracket | Yes — strongest possible |
Locating studs behind plasterboard
Most UK plasterboard walls are built on a timber or metal stud frame. Studs are typically spaced at 400mm or 600mm centres. If your TV bracket mounting holes align with studs, screwing directly into the stud through the plasterboard gives the strongest possible fixing — significantly stronger than any cavity anchor.
A stud finder locates these precisely. On plasterboard jobs we check for studs first and use them where available. Where studs do not align with the bracket mounting points, we use appropriately rated cavity fixings.
How many fixings are needed?
Most TV wall brackets have 4–8 mounting holes. We use as many as the wall and bracket allow. Distributing the load across more fixing points reduces the stress on each individual fixing and provides redundancy. A 75-inch TV mounted with multiple Grip-It anchors carries a total rated capacity well in excess of the TV weight, which is the kind of safety margin we aim for.
Why large TVs on plasterboard need professional installation
The stakes are higher with larger, heavier TVs. A 30cm TV falling off a wall is an inconvenience. A 75-inch, 38kg TV falling off a wall causes serious damage — to the TV, to the wall, to anything beneath it, and potentially to anyone nearby.
The assessment required — identifying the exact plasterboard thickness, locating studs, selecting the right cavity fixing type, and verifying load ratings — takes experience and the right tools. It is the most common type of job where DIY attempts fail. Our plasterboard TV mounting specialist service covers all of this as standard.
What you can expect from a professional plasterboard installation
On plasterboard jobs we:
- Use a stud finder and electronic detector to locate studs and check for hidden pipes/cables (BS 7671:2018 electrical-safety compliant)
- Select the appropriate cavity fixing type for the specific plasterboard thickness and construction
- Use as many bracket mounting points as possible and sanity-check the load (bracket arm length × TV centre of gravity × pull-out rating) before drilling
- Pull-test the bracket before hanging the TV
