The Challenge

Why Period Homes Need Specialist Care

Victorian and Edwardian walls are built from different materials than modern homes — and the original features matter.

Lath and plaster, not plasterboard

Victorian walls are built from thin wooden laths covered in lime plaster — a completely different substrate. Modern cavity anchors don't work the same way, and the plaster is more brittle.

Solid brick chimney breasts

Most period chimney breasts are load-bearing brick. These are excellent for mounting when drilled correctly — but require SDS tools and masonry expertise, not a cordless drill.

Irreplaceable period features

Picture rails, cornices, ceiling roses, architraves, fireplace surrounds — original details you don't want to lose. Mounting position has to respect these, and drilling must stay well clear.

Our Approach

How We Handle Period Walls

Diamond-Tipped Brick Drilling

For solid brick behind plaster, we use SDS hammer drills with diamond-tipped masonry bits. Clean holes, fixings sized to the TV's loaded weight — including larger TVs (up to 85") when the wall, bracket and load match up.

Lath-Safe Toggle Bolts

On lath-and-plaster walls, we use toggle bolts that open behind the lath for a wide bearing surface. Far more secure than standard screws on this substrate.

Feature-Aware Positioning

We plan the TV position to respect picture rails, cornices and mouldings. If you'd prefer a specific height below a picture rail, we work to it.

Heritage-Conscious Finish

Minimal drilling. Vacuum-controlled dust. Clean-up on completion. Walls handled carefully — fixing holes are small and easily touched up.

Common Questions

Victorian House TV Mounting FAQ

Can I mount a TV on a lath and plaster wall?

Yes — we mount TVs on lath-and-plaster walls regularly. These walls need different fixings to modern plasterboard: we use toggle bolts and stud-mounted brackets rather than grip-it anchors, because the lath substrate behaves differently under load. Every job is fully insured.

Will drilling damage the original plaster?

With the right technique, damage is kept minimal. We use sharp masonry or HSS drill bits on a low setting, score the plaster before drilling to reduce the chance of cracking, and vacuum dust as we go. Any minor surface scuffing is easily touched up. We treat every period wall with care, but plaster is plaster — small fixing holes are unavoidable.

Can you work around picture rails, cornices and other period features?

Yes — and we will. We plan the TV position to sit naturally below picture rails and avoid cornices and ceiling roses. If you have fireplace surrounds, architraves or other original features, we route around them and keep all fixings away from the mouldings.

What if my Victorian house is listed?

Listed buildings — including Grade II — vary in what they restrict. Before booking, please check your listing description and consult your local conservation officer about TV mounting. We can describe exactly what the work involves so you can pass accurate details on; the decision to proceed is yours and your conservation officer's.

How do you mount a TV on a Victorian chimney breast?

Most Victorian chimney breasts are solid brick with plaster on top, which is one of the strongest surfaces for mounting. We use SDS drilling with masonry anchors sized to the TV's loaded weight. Larger TVs (up to 85") are typically suitable on solid brick once the wall condition, bracket and fixings are matched — confirmed on the day. See our chimney breast guide for the full method.

How much does TV mounting in a Victorian house cost?

TV mounting in a Victorian house starts from £100. Most Victorian-property jobs use our Standard tier (from £150) — walls vary between solid brick, lath-and-plaster, and dot-and-dab plasterboard, and our installer carries fixings for all three. See /pricing.
